Waverly Hills

(Historical Tour)

September 2006, I got the opportunity of a life time for me. I went to pick a friend up from a small town in east Indiana, not far from the Kentucky state line. When I arrived their I realized how close I was to Louisville Kentucky and thought I have to try and find Waverly Hills Sanatorium. So my friend and I left with our little map quest paper and headed out. When we got to Louisville, it was quiet easy to find the road that was given as the address, but it seemed like their was no way we were in the right area. The area we were in was a residential area and the actual address brought us to a golf course. We were a little confused to say the least. We decided to drive into the golf course and as I turned my head to the left I seen a huge building upon a hill.

It was so amazing it took my breath away, and I could hardly hold back the excitement I was feeling. We found a little dirt road that lead up to the sanatorium. We then came upon a big locked gate with no trespassing signs posted everywhere. So we turned around and drove to the parking lot of the golf course. We then called the phone number listed on the web site for tour information, and we spoke with Tina Matthingly, one of the building’s owners. She was very sweet and said that all the tours were sold out and their were no openings. We then explained to her that we had drove from Illinois and it was an unexpected trip and we were just checking on tours while we were in the area, and that it has always been a dream of mine to visit Waverly. Tina said you know what, if you come back tomorrow we will be happy to squeeze you in on our historical tour. Tina was so nice, she did not have to do this for us, she is so busy with tours selling out that we felt very privileged to be attending the tour.

The following day we showed up and parked in front of this amazing building so rich in history. We all meet in the old (now newly remolded) laundry facility, where we watched a short film that told about Waverly and about Tuberculosis. We were then split into two groups to begin our tour. On this day the tour groups were very large, but that did not hamper our tour at all. Our tour guide and historian did a wonderful job. He told stories and history about every floor we went to. He took all the time needed to answer any questions any of the guests might have. He also gave ample time for visitors to take pictures and look around without feeling rushed. Waverly is a great place to visit and learn about, with people who really care about preserving the history the buildings and grounds.

I look forward to visiting again soon with M.I.G.S. and doing a full night investigation. I would highly recommend any group wanting to investigate Waverly to first attend the historical tour and get a feel for the place. I guarantee anyone entering this building or its grounds will walk away feeling a strong sense of respect for the building. I feel this place is a very powerful place and look forward to returning again real soon.

Alicia’s Visit of Waverly Hills

(Paranormal Tour)

This July, I was in Louisville, Kentucky, for a 10-day genealogy research trip. Although my main objective for the trip was to dig up anything and everything I could on one branch of my family, I couldn’t be that close to Waverly Hills without taking the opportunity to view the location and take a tour. When I suggested trying to attend on of the paranormal tours, my mother was just as anxious as I was to get up there and see what it was all about. We arrived outside Waverly early enough in the evening that we were able to get several pictures before night fell. The tour began in the laundry room with a short introduction video, which included the T.A.P.S. investigation of the location. From there, we, along with about 12 others, were slowly lead through a 2-hour tour of this history filled structure. The tour guides were very informative of both historical details and reported paranormal activity of the building.

The highlight of the night, in my opinion, was the time that the group spent on the fourth floor, which is known for the “shadow people”. The guide split the group into two smaller groups, using separate ends of the hallway to conduct our experiment. When the guide asked for a volunteer, I eagerly stepped up to volunteer. I was told to walk, in the dark (by myself), down the hallway. Then I was told to stop and slowly turn around. I stood there for a short while before he asked me to slowly walk back towards the group. Although I did not turn around to see what everyone else was seeing, I didn’t have to by their reactions. I was able to see for myself, as my mother volunteered next. Just as I did, she walked down the hallway, stopped, turned around, and slowly make her way back to me and the rest of the group. As she walked back to us, I could see the shadows of what appeared to be the height of children quickly darting back and forth behind her from one doorway across the hall to another, then back again. It was one of the most awesome paranormal experiences I have ever personally witnessed. I would have though my every were playing tricks on me in the dark hard it not been for the others in the group describing the exact things I was witnessing at the same moment!

Unfortunately due to the number of people on the tour, any chances of EVPs were unsuccessful - there were just too many people to talk or make noises. After getting home and reviewing the DVD I recorded of my tour, I, along with the rest of MIGS, were extremely excited to see that at the conclusion of the tour I captured a upper body apparition in one of the rooms that has been remodeled since the new owners have taken over the building. I specifically remember this part of the tour and can attest to the fact there was no one in the area the apparition was captured. In addition, upon reviewing the video, the apparition moved from behind furniture in the room, exposing this leg-less torso for a brief moment before disappearing before our eyes.

So, needless to say, my experience at Waverly Hills is one that I will never forget. I highly recommend anyone that has the chance to go - to do so!! It is well worth the time!
